Playing subtitles on an iPod means hardcoding the subs onto the media file. There are some applications that make this possible and HandBrake (http://handbrake.fr/) immediately comes to mind. All you need is a media file and a .srt file. Look here for more info: https://trac.handbrake.fr/wiki/Subtitles
The rest of this post is assuming you have purchased this media from iTunes.
The short answer is no, there is no easy way to put subtitles on an iPod playing iTunes purchased movies. Half your problem is the media you have purchased being DRM protected. What's required is removing the DRM, then hardcoding a .srt (subtitle) file to your purchased .m4v. This is a legal grey area so I won't elaborate further; the advice is legal in some countries and not in others. Don't quote me on this but I'm under the impression that iTunes' ToS forces you to agree that you don't own any purchased media and thus cannot edit the files in any way, irrespective of your location.

Thanks, I thought it was something behind the scene going on. And just to clarify this point, can we still use it as a MDP? Or will Apple have to put out a separate port for those who want the MDP.

I don't know specifically about the jailbreak but I'm guessing that if you go in to the Apple store for your broken home button, they will give you a different phone (refurb).
That may make this a moot question.

Essentially, we need to find someone who still has the Optimum 1.0 app on an iPad 1. Then they can jailbreak their iPad, crack the app and upload it to us.
Until then, 99% of us are SOL :apple:

Keep in mind that Apple probably realizes that the current 'music' iPod can't evolve into a 'video' iPod without giving up so much that we love with it now. They realize that if they are going to make a true video iPod the ergonomics will have to change. The screen will have to be bigger. The device will have to be bigger. It will have to be heavier (mostly for strong battery).
When they realized that this new video device can't replac the current iPod because of the compromises that it required, they began to rethink the whole device. But when they did this, they also began to think "What else can this little bugger do?".
There have been so many rumors about the added functionality of this device and I believe that Apple has played around with them all, getting rid of many and keeping only a few. They are finally locked down on its new features and are working (or hopefully already done) on the new way to interact with this device. I have little doubt that the interface, once we see it, will be that same old "Why didn't we think of this before" kind of thing. The question I keep asking myself is what the NEW features will be. I don't think it will be just video.
Some new features I would like are: Wireless for Internet access (either WiFi for cellular), clean way for inputting text (for Calendar, e-mail, web surfing, etc.), eBook reading (possible new category for the iTunes Store with both purchase and subscription), and if they can get the device small enough a phone.
I think that Steve gave us hints with this when he said recently that he was as proud of the products that they didn't release as the ones that they have. I think that they had tried to make an upgraded Video iPod to replace the current line but ultimately came to the conclusion that the changes they were trying to make spoiled what we like about it in the first place. It was then decided that this Video iPod was going to be a new category.
So don't worry about loosing the wheel, or the compactness of your iPod. It's not going away. This isn't the device we are talking about.

I'm looking to setup an external hard drive with my airport extreme.
Plan to use it for:
Time machine backups
Air drive
I'm looking for about 500GB to 1TB. Ideally, the drive will be setup near my TV, so it is important that it is quiet. Any suggestions for an external drive?
Order of importance:
1. Quiet
2. Size (500GB+)
3. Price
4. Looks
I did search, but surprisingly did not find many relevant posts. If you are aware of any, please link to them. Thanks!

Hi,
i hope i can explain this correctly.. I am making a page that creates a 3d pie chart for the different types of calls my work has. I have a MySQL database that has jobs and referrers.. Anyway thats not imporant.. what I need to pass to the pie chart is the top 10 best referrals. The two bits of data for each record i have are...
$referrer[] (pulled from a Jobs table in my database)
$referrercount[] (a count of all jobs for that referrer query)..
I know php has a sort feature but i need the 2 variables to stay in sync. I know i need to use a 2 dimensional array but I really am struggling to understand them. can someone give me a code example using the following data...
$referrer[0] = "Company A"
$referrercount [0] = 300
$referrer[1] = "Company B"
$referrercount [1] = 500
$referrer[2] = "Company C"
$referrercount [2] = 100
I hope this makes sense..?

If it is an iMac, or in fact, any G3, check to see if there is a firmware update that you need to run.

I agree. The poop is on Apple's hands here. They are the ones that have the power to unlock these phones but they are more interested in corporate money instead of customer satisfaction.
Contractual obligations...
They aren't allowed to unlock them if they are locked. And in the case of the US, it seems they might be contractually prohibited from selling unlocked units themselves.

It probably won't be long before they kill off Office for Mac and Messenger for Mac. I just hope that iWork is mature enough by then to handle the office needs of some users.

Thanks everybody for all your suggestions. I am thinking that I am going to stick with Numbers for a while.
If I was going to try something other than Numbers it would make sense to at that point at least go with MS Office. Having said that, I think I am going to stay with Numbers.

Looking at buying my first mac and looking at a mini. I listen to a lot of music on high quality speakers attached to my pc, so I'm wondering if there's a sound quality difference between the MBP, the iMac and the Mac Mini.
Any help you can give me would be appreciated.
Thanks.

yup purchased on september 24th I always procrastinate (butchered spelling)
Me too.
I finally filled out my form, but found I was on day 47, and they say within 45 days. I called the rebate center. They were very nice, and said there is a 15 day grace period, but to get it in asap and I would be covered :)

Have a look here http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1451 it gives a few pointers on troubleshooting iTunes including instructions how to rebuild library. I had a similar issue with iTunes 9, when I could not add music to slideshows. Did a library rebuild and all worked well. Just as a first step, have you checked in Disk Utility for disk errors and rebuilt file permissions recently?

Besides a processor upgrade, the biggest upgrade from iphone 4 to iphone 5 is likely to be 4G. But is that guaranteed to be in iphone 5? I don't know.
Anyway, for people who find iphone 4 suits their needs, I doubt 4G is going to be a big sell right away. It seems to be available only in certain markets. I think unless someone is in one of those markets, there wouldn't be a rush to upgrade. Perhaps for those who want a better processor for gaming a need would exist.
