I believe in God. Why? Because I could never fathom a world where the Dallas Cowboys are 1-6 and the Texas Rangers are in the World Series.
That should turn even the most stone-hearted athiest into a believer.
Then again, watch the Dallas Cowboys these days and it might turn you to existentialism. They lost in horrifying fashion 35-17 yesterday at JerryWorld.
The Cowboys are no longer beating themselves. They're just losing. They're losers. It's quite extraordinary, compelling TV. I'd feel bad for Jerry Jones if he wasn't part of the problem. I'd feel bad for Wade Phillips if he wasn't such a miserable, condescending turd.
The talk every week is whether Jones should fire Phillips. I mean, I don't think it's a question if Phillips should be fire. He's clearly not very good and he's lost this team. The only reason you don't fire him is due to the impending work stoppage. I guess. I honestly don't see how it matters.
The other debate -- especially in the franchise -- against firing Phillips now is that the change "wouldn't do any good." Quite a choice of words considering they're 1-6 and playing like shit.
Maybe a coaching change mid-season won't do any good. But it sure as hell won't hurt. I frankly probably can't get worse, being blown out by a suspected bad team at home.
It's the principle of the thing and a message to the entire franchise: Shape up or ship out, assholes. Also, it'd be different if Phillips' defense was laying down the wood and the offense was scoring three points. If anything, the defense is the problem.
Cowboys fans should be livid today.
Grades:
Quarterback -- D
The numbers look good, but never during that game did I feel that Jon Kitna was going to win that game for the Cowboys. It's an unfair grade probably. He essentially didn't do anything that Romo was doing while healthy -- yards between the 40s.
Running Back -- F
Averaged 2.3 yards per carry. Granted, a ton of blame should be placed on the offensive line. But did you watch those backs and think ... hmm, they're running hard. Why Tashard Choice didn't get any looks is beyond me. Felix Jones was responsible for one of those interceptions.
Wide Receiver -- F
Miles Austin's hands have turned into the worst in the league. That's saying something considering he's on a team with Roy Williams. Both guys are currently behind Dez Bryant in my personal depth chart.
Tight End -- C
Jason Witten had 10 catches and 97 yards. Unfortunately, the idea that you win games with a marquee tight end is untrue. It's like an NBA team depending on their seventh man to win a game.
Offensive Line -- D
Considering Kitna went back to pass 50+ times and was sacked twice is quite the achievement. Pass protection was good. Run blocking was ... less than poor.
Defensive Line -- F
Maurice Jones-Drew did what he wanted, when he wanted. I think Stephen Bowen made a play on David Garrard once. Igor Olshansky is less than useless. That crew has quit.
Linebackers -- F
Have you ever seen DeMarcus Ware so quiet? Have you watched him get blocked so easily? There was a play where Jones-Drew was turning the left corner and Ware was getting blocked. It was as if Ware just continued with the block instead of fighting through it for the tackle. Jones-Drew got by him for a relatively big gain.
Secondary -- F
As I stated Saturday, as Garrard goes, so go the Jaguars. Garrard looked like Joe Montana thanks to the Cowboys secondary. If Newman can't play, then he shouldn't be on the field. He's not that good anyway. Those safeties are horrid. Thankfully, I started Mike Sims-Walker on my fantasy team.
Special Teams -- C
OK. Didn't notice them one way or another. Suddenly David Beuhler at kicker is the least of their worries.
Coaching -- F
Did those 53 guys look ready to play to you? I thought the play calling was especially awful. The defense had zero clue as to how to stop the juggernaut Jaguar offense. Eveyrone's out of answers and there far too many questions.
