If a first-place team wins, and no one is in the arena, does it make a sound?
The Dallas Stars beat the Eastern-leading Washington Capitals last night 2-1 in front of a generous 14,000 fans.
The Stars have won five straight allowing just six goals in that span. Dallas is second in the Western Conference and first in the Pacific Division.
Yet, it's not gotten on the radar of the Dallas sports fan. We should not be surprised.
I think fans are hung over and tired. In the past month, we've had a World Series, monumental blowouts from the Dallas Cowboys, the Dallas Mavericks are rolling, the stinkin' soccer team's playing in their respective finals in addition to the holidays and the everyday bullshit we normally put up with.
Throw in the fact that the Stars are a mere 24 games into the season, they're coming off a very disappointing season last year, they've been uneven at worst this year and, although they're first in the Pacific, they're also three points from being last.
Why they couldn't sell out the American Airlines Center with Alex Ovechkin's only visit is odd. Still, it's a football town. Always will be.
Notes:
1. With the third-worst penalty kill in the league, you wonder how much longer the Stars can keep it up.
2. Andrew Raycroft stopped 37 shots in the win. He's been a fantastic pick-up for the Stars considering their struggles with adequate back-up goalies the last several seasons. He's 3-1 with a 1.65 GAA.
3. All four of Mike Ribeiro's goals have come in the last two weeks. Last night's was the first power-play goal. You have to think that'll need to go up for the Stars to keep up.
4. Gigantic game winner from Brandon Segal. Already with three goals and an assist in 22 games, which already eclipses his usage from last year.
