When did journalists start reporting rumors?
Evan Grant's in sunny Orlando, Fla. reporting on the MLB Winter Meetings. He had some juicy tidbits.
Cliff Lee's apparently telling teammates that a sixth year gets him back with the Rangers at about $20 million a year. That's $120 million for those keeping score at home.
Again, it doesn't seem money is the issue. He's a $20 million a year guy. It's the years. The Yankees may or may not give six. Probably more likely to than the Rangers.
Grant things a package of Martin Perez/Tanner Scheppers with Derek Holland, Julio Borbon and Jurickson Profar/Luis Sardinas gets Zack Greinke. All reports are that the asking price for Greinke is not getting lower. Then again, the Royals have him on the books until 2012, so what's the rush.
Perez is coming off his worst year. Holland and Borbon's usefulness in the bigs is, at the very least, questionable. Scheppers is injury prone, or so we think. Profar and Sardinas are kids.
What if the Rangers wound up with both Lee and Greinke? Yowza.
By the way, Jon Heyman is reporting that Brandon Webb is scaring the New York Mets away. This goes along with my rule that if a player's injury past scares the Mets away, it should scare you away.
