I bought my 13-inch MBA back in the winter and it's the best notebook I have ever used.

I say it's a notebook because it doesn't feel like a netbook. It's got a big trackpad, a full-size keyboard, a gorgeous high-DPI display, it's super thin. And it runs Logic Express smooth as silk. A netbook can't do those things.

    Lasso? I don't get it.

Sounds good. :) What about Numbers? I pray they don't dumb it down like Pages, please!

Pages is great -- not dumbed down at all.

You may have 18GB free HDD capacity, but Boot Camp needs the space it wants to partition in a continouos area, thus if you have 18GB free, the 10GB you want to partition might not be continouos enough for Boot Camp.
The only way to do this, would be to clone your existing Mac OS X installation onto an external HDD, then erasing the internal HDD while booted from Mac OS X on the external HDD and then cloning it all back.

Use CarbonCopyCloner (http://www.bombich.com) or SuperDuper (http://www.shirt-pocket.com/superduper/superduperdescription.html) to make a 1:1 copy.
How to format a new HDD to install Mac OS X or make a bootable copy onto (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=12483448&postcount=22)

So what you're saying is: Clone my current Mac OS X 10.6 drive then boot Mac OS X from there? And while I'm booting off of my Mac OS X drive, then I install Boot Camp from there right?

Thanks for the info too. :D

Well, I've tried Virtual II now and it seems to work pretty well although I'm struggling with the keys (I'm trying to play Lode Runner and I find the movement keys (I,J,L,M) cumbersome).
I tried "Use arrow keys as joystick" but that didn't seem to work consistently for some reason.

Basically I just want to play Lode Runner in the same way as MAME's Lode runner (arrow keys for movement, ALT and CTRL for digging). I have several mazes I made myself back in the day when I used my own Apple ][ actively, so it would be great to play all that again, but on my Mac of course. What would the simplest solution be for that (Virtual II seems overkill and a waste of money when I'm not going to take more advantage of its features and the fact that its keys can't be remapped, or so it seems.

is it a genuine charger? I saw somewhere someone else did buy a non-genuine charger and voltage was not the same thus making lot of problems, check the DC-inboard.

Ah I did not think of that, I'll check.

    Thanks!

Sounds good. :) What about Numbers? I pray they don't dumb it down like Pages, please!
If a word processor can even be dumbed down, it's been poorly designed... Pages is my wp of choice now for just about everything. I find Word too noisy-- I have never used more than half the functions in Word (even after putting in a good effort to "learn to use them effectively").

I agree with the crowd that thinks compatibility is important. There's two levels of compatibility though-- functional and superficial. If they can make it functionally compatible with a reasonable subset of Excel functions, then it will be enough for me to use and share files.

There are times though when superficial compatibility is critical-- where it needs to print and format on another machine just the way you wrote it. I run into this problem with Keynote-- I can export something to Powerpoint to use as a starting point for cleanup, but it's rarely presentable straight from export.

    Maybe Cellmate?
I like it! Much better than "Charts" or "Numbers"...

Why should Ferrari put good tires on their cars?

Just think about it; here's a company championing (used to, anyway) their music player and how great the experience was, but then at the same time made sure that the final product (the music that enters your head) sounds like total ass because of 10 cent headphones they include with their premium product.

Same thing applies to Ferrari--why build an awesome car that's made for great performance, and then put 10 cent tires on it, resulting in a poor final product in terms of end-user experience?

A premium music player is useless without good headphones, just as a premium car is useless without good tires.

Putting crappy headphones in the box of a premium priced/marketed product is an oxymoron, and a bit of an insult to the consumer. And spare the "Oh but that would cost too much for the consumer", because that wouldn't exactly flow with everyone praising a $6B profit quarter.

What would be the alternative? Put some Dr. Dre head phones in the box and have the iPod cost $80 more? To what end?

Very few people care about the quality of the headphones that come with iPods. For those that do, they can buy nice set of headphones and not worry about the 10 cent ones that Apple puts in the box.

If Apple put in a half decent set of headphones and increased the price by, say $20, the folks that want even better headphones would complain that they have to pay an extra $20 for headphones they'll never use.

But see, that's just it. If we're working back and forth on .docs and .xls's, we can't have ANY formating problems - they've got to match. AND I'm not going to jump through any hoops by using this or that piece of software to make it happen. Don't have time - gotta produce!

Well, MS Office is a piece of software, so you kind of still have to "use this or that piece of software". If you find NeoOffice/OpenOffice (they're the same thing - NeoOffice is java-based, and OpenOffice uses X11. The only difference is that NeoOffice is a little behind on versions) handles formatting fine, then use it, and you won't have problems.

And guess what, they're both free. So why don't you go and try them out. Who knows, they might surprise you.

What does the page uses Javascript for? Perhaps you can figure out what the Javascript problem is. Have you tried viewing it in mobile Safari with Javascript turned off?

Is this site online somewhere? If you post a link it would be easier to help you.

I'm going to be in Seattle on holidays from Canada during the launch and plan to be there to get the 3G iPad. With the 5pm launch time, I'm just trying to figure out what time to show up.

i know...im really unsure of what to expect considering wifi release, presales, etc. so i'll likely spend most of my mid afternoon around shopping and keeping a close eye. plenty of things around.

and where do you get that info?

The iPhone 3Gs has an ARM type 7 CPU. It is the first iDevice to have one, with the iPod Touch 2G being the last type 6. Apple no longer includes the type 6 instruction set. Similar to how Snow Leopard no longer works on PPC Macs. The iPhone 3Gs was also the first iDevice to have the PowerVR SGX535 GPU. The iPod Touch 2G was the last to have the PowerVR MBX Lite 3D. The driver kext is no longer in the firmware and its doubtful that the 4.2.1 one would work.

Furthermore, Apple doesn't sign the soft SHSH for 4.3 and none of the jailbreaking tools out support it. So unless the OP wrote his own method for jailbreaking 4.3 and getting around the soft SHSH, he has just faked his firmware and build number.

Hi all, hope there's some antique mac guru's around here, anyway have a motorola starmax 3000/180 that's had the memory maxed (160mb) sonnett G3 in the L2 slot, running OS 9, the modem port died what i want to do is install a PCI modem but have been unable to find any info on this either compatible models or drivers i realize this is an antique suitable for a doorstop but here in Bugtussle where i live 56k is as good as it gets and this unit has been more reliable than a trusty dog for 5+ years i know i can use the printer port for another external modem but i'd really rather have an internal one if possible

The problem for the other tablet makers, currently, is the economy. IMO, if you aren't first, then you need to do something to penetrate the market. (There are multiple "firsts", 1st to market, 1st competitor...) By the time M$ and others hit the tablet market, they will have to penetrate. Their hardware will have to be superior and expensive and they will have to sell for a loss.

This is where the economy comes in. No one's going to sell for a loss in a down economy. M$ xbox used this to penetrate the gaming market. If M$ didn't sell the xbox for a loss, the platform would never have been adopted and would have gone the way of so many before it.

The only viable option I see right now for a competitor to Apple, is Amazon. Apple is built and sustained by iTunes. If Amazon can re-create iTunes and make it available on Android/WP7/RIM, Apple will get a run for their money.

Amazon would be smart to become a viable iTunes competitor and then subsidize the cost of the hardware. Imagine buying a phone from Amazon with a carrier subsidization and an Amazon subsidization.

That is quite weird. Normally, simulated surround sound headsets use optical cable to get their surround sound. I also only ever heard of optical, hdmi or a series of analogue cables being able to produce it. The only way I know of macs without dedicated audio cards being able to output surround sound is by optical or firewire using the multiple series of analogue cables as I mentioned.

There might be a driver issue that doesn't let osx recognize the processor of the megaloadon. Have you tried hooking it up to any other windows computer of your friends or family?
