Even though Apple is Apple, going up against Amazon, which will have more movie options at the time of launch is going to be tough...
unless... they release some sort of new hardware [full screen ipod, plzkthx] that will take the spotlight.
Here's hoping for "one more thing"... on Sept 12.
I think it's funny that this is pretty much the only mention of Amazon in this thread... even though Amazon will be announcing a competing movie store in a few days with supposedly much more content than Apple's offering! :D
It just shows how people think that Amazon will simply not be able to compete with what Apple has up it's sleeve. You just *know* that Apple would not announce this thing until they had the end-to-end user experience worked out to perfection - iPod-iTunes styleee - effectively using hardware and software that works seamlessly and that anyone can pick up and use.
In contrast, Amazon will launch a service that will have a very comprehensive back catalog but will be frustrating to use as after downloading your movie, your options will be:

Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez,

little sister Madison,

Taylor Swift says Selena Gomez

Wow, this would be amazing. Screw my plan to buy an ACD if this happens. A MacBook and a 23" iMac would look awesome on my new glass desk. ;)
It needs:
Glossy Screen (Even if it's only an option)
Up to 3GB RAM (at least; 4GB would be nice)
Merom (Obviously)
Extras that would be cool:
Option for Black
No Chin
That's all I can think of as the iMac is a quite capable, beautiful looking machine already. :)
This price range would seem fair to me:
17" iMac $1299
20" iMac $1499
23" iMac $1699
noway Apple sells 23 inch one at 1699, especially only $200 difference. from 20inch ACD and 23inch ACD there is $300 difference to begin with. I am expecting 23 inch one to come no less than at $1999.
of course it would come with more goodies, such as more RAM and better GPU

I see a little confusion on numbers, for the straight facts review the two PDFs provided by Apple (data summary is a good one to understand unit volumes)...

Q306 Financial Statements (http://images.apple.com/pr/pdf/q306fin_statements.pdf)

I have to say I never heard of an "App Store" before Apple started one. Was there another before then?
When I open windows in my home an I running a PC?
App + Store? You're right, I personally didnt hear that combo until Apple started its iOS days.
I do feel though, that adding "store" to a term that was not invented (only popularized) by Apple does not justify trademark protection. Anyways, its laughable to think that Apple could lose any business to an "Amazon App Store" or a "Windows App Store"...if you have an iOS device, those stores are essentially useless to you. Stay frosty dude!

The basic process of "This is my source, this is my output" has been around as long as film editing. The overall look of video editing, be it tape to tape, or the current (FC7) editing layout is more or less the same. In points, out points, etc.
Anyway, you know what. Fine. You can have your new iMovie. All yours. I sure as hell can't use it. The trailers in '11 were cute, but beyond that, it's not nearly good enough for polished output. If you want am, there's your option.
All I'm asking is they leave final cut PRO to the pros who know how to use it and like the interface. I want under the hood tweaks to make it faster. Cocoa?

That not all the manuals you've driven have been, bluntly, crap cars to begin with.
:)
There's not a motor vehicle that's ever been created that I would be happier driving than riding in. The Camaro was a nice car, but it was still more pleasant as a passenger than as a driver. I don't like to drive. It has nothing to do with whether I've driven the "right" car or only "crap" cars.
I suspect that any car you refer to as a "crap" car is a car I wouldn't own, even with an automatic transmission - driving enthusiasts tend to like smaller cars, which I despise.

yeah diesels are more fitting to people who drive a lot of miles, especially when it's highway driving where no other current drive train beats diesel engines for driving constant speeds in the 100-130 km/h territory
that's why the rule of thumb is for comuters: if you drive 40 miles each day on the highway to your work with few red lights on the way: get a diesel
if it's constant stop-and-go and red lights traffic: get a hybrid or electric car
if it's 2 miles or less: get a bike ;)
regarding cars as very international affairs: the history is plastered with failed attempts at "world cars" .. even more so when a car makers call one of their cars a 'world car' in their PR before the release

I think people are getting confused with an iMac and "workhorse". The iMac was always intended to be a consumer-level device and the consumer desktop segment may be evolving to apps that are touch-friendly (kitchen/TV). Essentially an even larger screen iPad. It also makes sense that the touch capability would help characterize/define the iMac line as different from the Pro line. Even though I'm a professional designer, choosing an iMac over a Pro has been a somewhat confusing decision. Making all the iMacs touch-enabled, would clarify that.
Pro users/developers who generally don't use iMacs, would still make use of a non-touch desktop system.

Absolutely. Although I've met many dozens of gay men in my life who, no matter what you plied them with, couldn't and wouldn't have sex with a woman. Can't say the same about a sizeable proportion of allegedly straight men.
Can't disagree with that analysis.
There are a hell of a lot of "straight" guys who are in the closet at least as far as being bisexual.

Holy smoke what is with all the bitching in this thread?
Final Cut X is coming! It seems to have all the stuff i'm dying for.. maybe even CUDA support! Damn now I got to sell my CS5 production suite..
And yeah if you want you can still use iMovie and feel good about it. I know enough people who got a great result out of it because they did not get stuck with tech they didn't understand. All these opinions about personal choices is a total waste of time.
Rejoice the choice and do something creative with all this energy
(FCP is rendering so I have time to waste lol...)

it's not unreasonable to assume that Apple could get the Yonah chips for less than Merom ones.
Are the Yonah chips being phased out now that Merom is coming on line?
I would think the same fab would produce the Merom chips...

This will probably change by the time anyone verifies it.

I think it's important for OS X to support Blue Ray as soon as possible, and to me it would seem crazy to not at least offer it as a BTO option when the Mac Pro is launched. Maybe if it's going to be in the PS3 then then high volume purchases will make it cheap enough to put into at least the high end Mac Pros as standard. Looking at the current prices of 800 then obviously that's too expensive to put in as standard.
It seems everything gets integrated these days, for example DVD+RW and DVD-RW both still exist (even though + is more popular and cheaper) so I would assume that sooner or later there will be writers than can work with both HD-DVD and Blue Ray.
Although I really would benefit from Blue Ray discs NOW, I couldn't afford it at current prices. However, I would be very disappointed in Apple as a company if they didn't have it as an option. The top of the range model should be the flagship of the very best and latest technology. Some people will have the money and will be very let down if Apple doesn't deliver.
