If you pinpoint one area of need for the Dallas Mavericks over the past decade, it's shooting guard. It's the reason Jason Terry is here. It's why Shan Foster adn Mo Ager were drafted. It's why Caron Butler was traded for last season.
The Mavs haven't had a good shooting guard since Michael Finley decided not to jump anymore and before that, Ro Blackman trolling the floor at Reunion Arena.
This current crop isn't much better, but it's deeper.
Caron Butler
Did you realize that every stat for Caron Butler went down once he joined the Mavericks? I can see how scoring went down, but I can't imagine why all the other numbers went down, including free-throw percentage. Much is expected from Butler this year. He's their undeniable No. 2 and he's going to have to make it a point to take the rock to the rim ... often and with force. The direction of this team depends a lot on Butler.
Jason Terry
I can't believe he's still here. I love JET and everything he's done for this franchise. Terry also represents what is wrong with this team. Soft and defenseless. Willing to settle for the outside shot and if it's not working, then you settle for losing.
Dominique Jones
At 6-4 and 205, he's shorter and stouter than anyone else on the court. He attacks the rim relentlessly. He's a bulldog. Like a mini-Brandon Bass. It's important for Jones to show something. I think he needs minutes and he won't get it unless he impresses Rick Carlisle. Even then, Mark Cuban may lay down the law. Jones needs to fill a role.
DeShawn Stevenson
I like DeShawn. A rough and tumble character who doesn't take shit off others and he doesn't back down. Kind of nutty and a guy who doesn't mind his role on the team as a ninth or 10th man. A guy who can start if need be. If Stevenson is your 10th or even eighth man, you have much bigger problems.
