A familiar face

Weird
The Detroit Red Wings visit the American Airlines Center (do you think they needed to dust off the seats?) for tonight's Dallas Stars home opener.

The Red Wings are always a big deal. It's no different than the San Antonio Spurs or New York Yankees coming into town.

But it has bigger significance. For the first time in his entire career, Mike Modano will play against the Dallas Stars.

As we all know, Modano was not re-signed by the Stars in the off season, and thinking he has something left in the tank, he signed on with the Red Wings at another attempt at glory.

I used to hate the older athlete stringing out his career. I don't anymore. Those guys know one thing and one thing only: Game day, the locker room, the guys, the travel, the aches, the winning and the losing. Who am I to judge them for wanting to keep it going? I wanted to play little league until I was 30. Why shouldn't they want to play professionally until their 60?

Still, it's odd. Think Roger Staubach playing against the Cowboys ... as a Washington Redskin. Or Dirk Nowitzki playing as a Spur.

Modano is the single greatest hockey player in North Stars/Stars history and one of the top five athletes in the history of Dallas-Fort Worth sportsdom. That does not go away.

I'm 100 percent sure there will be some standing ovations tonight.
